Unlike native seeding, Pioneer Native Sod provides an instantly established native landscape with immediate erosion control, immediate stormwater benefits, and significant long-term water savings.

Pioneer Native Sod is a mix of native Colorado grasses selected for their adaptability, drought tolerance, and aesthetic appeal. It is a mixture of seven native species that includes both cool-season and warm-season grasses — including Blue Grama (Colorado’s state grass!) and Little Bluestem, as well as cool-season grasses like Rocky Mountain Fescue and Green Needlegrass.

There are no introduced European turfgrasses in the mix, because our planting technique does not require grasses like red fescue or perennial ryegrass to hold the sod together. All grasses included are native to Colorado and appropriate for Front Range landscapes.

Pioneer Native Sod requires substantially less water than traditional Kentucky bluegrass once established. A stated 50% reduction in water use is a very honest approximation. While all newly installed sod requires irrigation during establishment, Pioneer Native Sod is designed to thrive with significantly reduced supplemental irrigation after rooting in.

Actual water use will vary depending on soil type, weather conditions, maintenance expectations, and site conditions.

What is certain is that each of these species grows and thrives along the Front Range natively, with no supplemental irrigation.
