Kentucky bluegrass       Poa pratensis

Kentucky bluegrass is the most prevalent lawngrass found in Colorado and the temperate reions of North America.  Kentucky bluegrass was introduced from Eurasia into Canada 200-300 years ago where it was then introduced to the United States.  This plant was never a native species of Kentucky as its name might indicate and is more widely known throughout the world as meadow grass.

Kentucky bluegrass is an adaptive turfgrass with a very high shoot density, good color, good traffic tollerance, and excellent recuperative potential.  Kentucky bluegrass is an excellent choice for most Colorado landscapes.  The recent water restrictions in Colorado have also validated Kentucky bluegrass as a tremendous survivor in this climate.  Under water restriction ranging from 2-3 times a week watering in Colorado Springs to Boulder's 2002 water restrictions of 1 time per week watering for ten minutes,  bluegrass demonstrated its amazing ability to rebound from even Boulder's water restrictions.
